Product photos with a clean or transparent background look consistent across a store, a marketplace listing and social posts. You don't need a studio to get there.
1. Shoot for an easy cut-out
- Use a plain background that contrasts with the product. A white wall or a sheet of card works well.
- Light the product evenly and avoid harsh shadows behind it.
- Keep the whole product in frame with a little space around it.
2. Remove the background
Background removal tools use AI to separate the subject from its background. Results are usually excellent for clear subjects, but fine details like hair, fur, glass and thin cables can need a touch-up.
3. Refine the edges
Zoom in and check the edges. Use an erase brush to clean leftover background and a restore brush to bring back parts of the product that were removed by mistake.
4. Export the right file
- Export a PNG to keep transparency.
- For a solid background, fill it with white or a brand colour, then export as WebP or JPEG for a smaller file.
- Keep a consistent size and padding across all product images so your grid looks tidy.
5. Check marketplace rules
Marketplaces often have their own requirements for background colour, image size and how much of the frame the product should fill. Check the guidelines for each platform you sell on.
